Every year 90 million tons of food are thrown away in Europe. The United Nation Food and Agriculture Organization states that ‘If food waste were a country, it would be the 3rd largest greenhouse gas emitter in the world.’ Stop Food Waste Day is an essential wake up call, but what if we took a step further, not just finding solutions for food waste but truly finding beauty in it.
This ‘Stop Food Waste Day’ we wanted to highlight companies that have the same approach to rescued food as us; not just the benefits, but the beauty of it. From lampshades to leather (vegan of course) here are 6 companies changing the game...
My Skin Feels, UK

At My Skin Feels we are proud proponents of rescued food. From the Italian organic food industry we rescue oats, tomato skins, olive pulp and citrus infused water for our luxury vegan skincare. Our unique (and frankly magical) fermentation process unleashes a host of nutrient rich and antioxidant benefits from these rescued foods that would otherwise go to landfill. A win-win for the environment and for our customers (especially those with sensitive or eczema-prone skin). Read more about our game changing, natural ingredients here.
Pluck, Canada

Toronto based tea company Pluck was established in 2012 with the goal of doing better for their customers and for the planet. Their upcycled citrus peels and cacao shells directly reduce food waste whilst also enhancing the flavour of their range of teas, including a ‘Citrus Ginger’ and ‘Chocolate Chai’ (yum!)
SAGES, UK

Based in London, SAGES transforms food waste into natural dyes that are like-for-like replacements for synthetic dyes and have been successfully integrated into a range of industrial dyeing processes.
Caracara Collective, Finland
Finland based designers Aleksi Vesaluoma and Aleksi Puustinen work with orange peel (rescued from the juicers at their local supermarkets) and mycelium strains to create their sophisticated range of home décor, including a highly covetable range of lampshades.
Ananas Anam, UK/Spain/Phillipines

Ananas Anam’s Piñatex® and Piñayarn® utilise the waste product from pineapple farming, namely the leaves of the pineapple plant, to create low impact natural textiles. Further to this the company is passionate about creating new jobs in rural areas and providing a second revenue stream for pineapple farmers.
DASH Water, UK

Did you know up to 40% of fruits and veg grown in the UK is going to waste? Not on DASH’s watch! You’ve probably seen this fizzy treat on your local supermarket shelves, DASH water infuses their sparkling waters with real, wonky fruit – the ‘misfits’ that would not make it to our store shelves.
